The region
Our region, el Priorat, extends along the Siurana river and its affluents, the Montsant and the Cortiella. It borders on the mountains from Prades and the mountain range Serra de Llaveria which separate it from the region in the north, el Baix Camp. The mountain range Serra de la Llena is the natural border from the neighbouring region, les Garrigues. In the southwest the region shares an open border with la Ribera d’Ebre region.
El Priorat gets its name from the authority that the Scala Dei Monastery and its prior had over some villages in the region which are known as Priorat històric, these being Poboleda, Porrera, Gratallops, La Morera de Montsant, Torroja del Priorat, La Vilella Alta and Bellmunt.

The official Priorat territory was set up by the Divisió Territorial de Catalunya in 1936. After this, apart from the historical Priorat, the region included the Cabacés Barony which in turn belonged to the Diocese of Tortosa, part of the Escornalbou Barony, property of the Archbishop from Tarragona, and finally the Cornudella and Ulldemolins Valleys together with the villages of Marçà and Falset which belonged to the County of Prades. The following villages have constituted el Priorat since then: La Bisbal de Falset, Cabacés, Capçanes, Cornudella del Montsant, Falset, la Figuera, els Guiamets, el Lloar, Marçà, Margalef, el Masrroig. El Molar, Pradell de la Teixeta, la Torre de Fontaubella, Ulldemolins and la Vilella Baixa.
